Deadly MERS spreads in S. Korea
A suspected Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) patient was pronounced dead in Daejeon, South Korea. He is a male in the 80s who had been quarantined as a MERS suspected patient and died of the deadly disease Wednesday.
The patient, 83, had been quarantined at a university hospital in Daejeon after showing symptoms of the MERS. He had stayed at the same ward of the No.16 confirmed patient.
If he is confirmed as a MERS case, this will bring the total number of MERS deaths to three.
The Ministry of Health & Welfare announced the number of Korean MERS patients grew five in a day to 35.
Of the five additional patients, three are secondary infections who were transmitted from the first Korean patient. The remaining two are tertiary infections who were transmitted after having contacted with the patient No.14 and 16, each. Patient No.35 is a doctor who had worked at hospital No.4 before the patient No.14 was confirmed as a MERS case. This drove up the number of tertiary infections to five.
The number of the quarantined rose 303 to 1,667, of which 1,503 are quarantined in their homes and 164 at hospitals. The MERS control task force said, “of the 47 state-designated wards for MERS patients, 33 or 70 percent are occupied.”
